What Causes PCOS?

PCOS affects 6‒10% of women in developed countries and up to 30% of overweight women. This hormone disorder is termed a 'syndrome' as it describes a group of symptoms that when clustered together collectively indicate a specific health problem.

Like most health 'syndromes' the symptoms of PCOS can vary differently from woman to woman. However our understanding of what causes PCOS is becoming a lot clearer.

To assist PCOS recovery FIVE FACTORS must be addressed.

  • PCOS and insulin resistance go hand in hand.
    Insulin is the hormone produced by the pancreas to help control your blood sugar levels. A diet high in sugary foods leads to ‘insulin resistance’. When this happens the body stops responding effectively to the actions of insulin. Insulin resistance leads to weight gain especially around the abdomen. In addition, weight gain associated with PCOS interferes with ovulation.
  • Excess androgens disrupt hormone balance.
    It’s normal for women to produce small amounts of androgens which are ‘male’ type hormones. However for women with PCOS the ovaries make excessive amounts in response to elevated insulin levels. Excess androgen production leads to the development of masculine characteristics such as excess face and body hair, acne and hair loss in the same pattern as male baldness.
  • Oestrogen dominance lowers fertility.
    Excess androgens have the ability to convert into oestrogen which results in greater levels of oestrogen, or ‘oestrogen dominance’. Oestrogen is the main female hormone. Over time too much of this hormone can suppress regular surges in follicle-stimulating hormones (FSH), the hormone that triggers ovulation. When this happens ovulation becomes irregular, leading to fertility issues.
  • Leptin resistance leads to poor appetite control.
    Leptin acts in the hypothalamus, the part of your brain that is responsible for coordinating many body functions, including your appetite to help control food intake and weight loss. Overweight individuals can develop resistance to the action of leptin. This ‘hunger control hormone’ is then not able to produce its usual effects on controlling the appetite and stimulating metabolism. Leptin resistance can set you up for an ongoing cycle of weight gain.
  • Weight gain sparks chronic inflammation.
    Recent research links poor blood sugar control and being overweight with long term inflammation. Since insulin resistance can make you overweight, the more overweight you are, the more inflammation is created in your body. When the inflammatory response is over stimulated you can experience swelling, pain, fatigue and headaches. There are a range of everyday foods that can trigger inflammation.
  • Gluten intolerance may be associated with infertility and PCOS.
    Gluten sensitivity is common in PCOS. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. When PCOS sufferers go gluten-free they often see a marked improvement in their PCOS symptoms including weight loss.
