Supplements and Herbs for Period Pain


Supplements and Period Pain

  • A good multivitamin and mineral tablet – this is a foundation supplement that provide you with a little bit of everything.

  • B vitamins - especially vitamin B1, B6 (which helps relieve pain and spasms) and B12. Read more.

  • Magnesium - acts as a muscle relaxant and has been shown to have a beneficial effect on painful periods and lower back pain.

  • Vitamin E – up to 70% of women have found this to be useful in treating painful periods.

  • Zinc - important for eliminating period pain because it is needed for the proper conversion of essential fatty acids.

  • Vitamin C with bioflavonoids - helpful with period pain because they help relax smooth muscle and reduce inflammation.

  • Essential fatty acids – help provide spasm and pain relief. Research has shown that women with low intakes of Omega 3 fatty acids (from fish, linseed and walnuts) have more painful periods than women who have a good intake.

  • Bromelain - this is an enzyme contained in pineapples which has been found to be extremely useful for treating painful periods. It has anti-inflammatory properties and helps as a natural blood thinner.
